Well I have finally finished the course. I feel that I have learnt so much but also feel these is so much more to go. I'd heard of most of the programmes and used a few of them but had not really had the opportunity to explore them in depth. I enjoyed the hands on approach and also enjoyed the interaction with my fellow participants. I found some programmes more challenging than others. I also feel that some of the programmes perhaps could have had more specific instructions , probably because I'm a little computer literate ...but I learning. I think that I'll have to go back to a few and refresh my memory of them...easy to forget when not actually using them regularly.
My sister-in-law is a teacher co-coordinator and was very impressed with the course and has herself signed up to do the course. She thinks it will be invaluable for teaching the teachers and is looking into organizing to have the teachers do the course. Also my craft group teacher who owns the largest tapestry store in Victoria was very impressed when I showed her the LibraryThing programme, as she has a vast collection of books she wanted to catalogue but did not know how...she will also use this programme to catalogue here collection for her shop...glad I could pass on some useful information.
Many thanks to Fiona for her many helpful hints, and also thanks to my fellow participants for their thoughts and input.

Back to Podcasts
I finally managed to work out how to work with the various podcast directories thanks to my work colleague Laura. I searched in Podcastalley under Swine Flu and found found one called Infectious Flu Updates. I copied the URL and then opened my Google reader and pasted the URL into add a subscription. I then had all the updates listed and listened to the most recent one. I also had a look in Mypodcast, Odeo and iTunes. I suppose I became confused with this one because the instructions were not really given, I guess you are just expected to know but for someone not that computer literate it can be daunting.

Week 12, E-Books and Audiobooks
Had a look at the World EBook Fair site and had a look through the Gutenberg Project and opened up some free e-books to view..didn't actually download any and probably there are not many that I would be interested in.
I also explored some of the "free book sites". Found a book in Academic Library ..Questia by Andre E Lejard on French Tapestry. Although I think it's great that I found the whole publication (all 110 pages ), I don't think I'd read or print it, I like to snuggle up at night with a good book rather than a good computer (difficult to view in bed).
Some of the e-book sites I found you had to register for as well.
I think there is a place for E-books, my library does subscribe to a few trainee syllabus books and there is definitely a use for e -books, although they are quite expensive.
Audio books could be good for the visually impaired and for me personally I like to listen to novels when driving long distances.

Week 10 Podcasts
Well.. I'm thoroughly confused with trying to load the ipod subject that I found, I had a bit of a play around with the podcast directories given, I eventually used MyPodcast to search for swine flu.. It came up with 32 so I selected "infectious flu update"..from here on I wasn't sure what to do ...I wanted to place a RSS feed onto my google reader and blog but couldn't find any instructions...oh well I think I'll go and make myself some lunch
Week 10 YouTube
I found this funny video on YouTube and tried embedding it to my blog but it would not work...telling me my HTML could not be accepted, I wasn't quite sure what to do so scraped this idea. I then copied the URL and and went to link in the posting area, pasted the url in the url area and away I went, hoping that it would work and it did.. I had used YouTube but never knew how to get the picture as well as the link, its simple really when you know what to do.

Week 9 Wikis & Rollo
HOORAY, I have my home computer back.
Although I have used Wikipedia before I had only skimmed the surface. On further inspection I found that there is a vast array of information stored. I did a quick search on Debra Byrne (I'm reading her autobiography at the moment), from here it leads you onto other subjects which in turn lead to further subjects and so on.
I also checked out some of the "sister projects", proverbs, quotations, species, etc.
I also had a look at some of the library wikis, these appear to be a good way of sharing information for both users and staff. I couldn't open the NZ Police Act Wiki, but did have a look at the NZ Government Wiki.
It appears that you need a special programme to create a Wiki, perhaps in a one person library it could create a lot of work, as it would need to be kept very up to date but would probably be very useful.
It also appears you need to create an account to add/up-date in Wiki, my question is how accurate is the information given, I'm assuming that if you have access you can add any information, anyway I'm still having a play around with Wikipedia.
I also created a Rollo account and started to play around with my favourite urls. So far it looks great being able to narrow my search to my favourite and most useful web pages.
Anyway, again I am going to go back to have another play around with Rollo. (phew...I'd forgotten how different using my laptop computer was..making lots if errors when typing but must press on)..Jenny

Week 8 Social Bookmarking. Del.icio.us
I had a play around with del.icio.us and found it quite useful. I liked the idea being able to manage my bookmarks under the relevant tags and also liked having my most recent used bookmarks show up on my del.icio.us toolbar. I will probably use this one in the library quite a lot once I finish organising all my bookmarks. I notice that other participants had trouble getting the bookmarks to be sorted alphabetically. I also tried this but with no success. Under tag options it seems to be set on "count" and I could not change it.

Week 7. Google home page - iGoogle
I had already created a iGoogle page when I created my Google Reader account. Just went into My Account and selected igoogle and away I went. I have added a few things, Nasa image of the day, most interesting sunsets, youtube to name a few, I did put quite a lot on and decided that I had to much and edited it a bit. I have played around with a few of the Library gadgets as well.
I really liked playing around with iGoogle but had to restrain myself from adding to much, I think I will use it quite a bit...

Week 6 Google Tools
Had a good look around at the google tools :
Google Books : I actually found the complete contents of a 1858 publication, "Bayexu Tapestry, an historical tale of the 11th century, from the French of Madam Emmt" , also has some great illustrations...what a find! I have to explore google books some more to compare with other search engines.
Google Maps : I hadn't used Google Maps before so was excited to have a look. Looked up hotels in Brunswick and narrowed down by selecting the category Hotels and Pubs - could also narrow down by cuisine and rating..resulting map showing all the hotels listed alphabetically with the corresponding letter on the map. Did everyone else find 10?
Looked up my address by putting my street name, number, post code & Victoria. Came up with my address with a map and photo (photo must be at least a year old as my old car is in the street). I navigated around to look at the surrounding areas, had fun zooming in and out.
I then looked up my work address, found it but it didn't have a photo but it did have a map. I was interested to see that from here I could access the College web page, there was also more information available in the "more information" area. 53 college related web pages were listed.. Things like our ASM details....I didn't realise so much was available here.
I then got the directions from work to home. It did give me the worst possible route, even though probably the most direct (I wouldn't go that way as very heavy traffic), oh well, I don't suppose the map knows that. I clicked on the "photo" to show me the roads as I travelled..I also notice that you can put Google Map on your phone.
Google Doc & Spreadsheet : had a quick look around here and did put a few documents in. Having trouble with our Council at the moment so setting up some folders with the different areas we are dealing with. I like the spread sheet and I think I can use it for organising events etc.
Also I can't wait to try out the Translation page.
I beginning to realise how all these different google tools come together.. ...

Google Tools
Having a look at Google Tools and products and see that I am already using some of them. To get this image I went into Images and simply typed in Bayeux Tapestry (tapestry is a passion of mine, even though this is not actually a tapestry as such)
I found this one in Flicker so it was easy to post onto my blog.

Week 5 Get Social - Myspace and Facebook
Well.. had a look at Myspace and some of the libraries that are using it. I think that this is good for the younger person and more suited to public libraries and the like, being informed of current events, what is available, what is happening etc. I don't think it would really be suitable for my library. Don't know of any medical libraries that have myspace!! does anyone know of one? I tried to have a look at Youthspace but my computer frooze and tried again and it it did all sort of crazy things, not much luck so gave up.
Secondly, opened up a Myspace account...had a lot of trouble as my mouse died on me so I was becoming very frustrated trying to do my best when it was winding down. Now that I am back at work I have checked to see if it went OK and it seems fine, I have added a few "friends" (fellow participants) and looking forward to adding more "stuff" and doing a bit more exploring of the possibilities. I was a bit nervous about putting in personal information about myself so really need to have another look at that... Anyway I'm on my own at work to-day so I expecting to be flat out so I had better get to it...

Week 4 - RSS & Feedreaders
As I had no idea about RSS feeds I was very interested in seeing how they worked. I signed up for both Google Reader and Bloglines. In google reader I set up the library feeds plus a few of my own, although I did have trouble with the ALIA one, I just could not get it to work. Also the SLV did not work as well but I was able to add some of their suggested feeds.
I liked the fact that I could follow all my existing blogs via the setting up page (under misc.) I have placed all my feeds under different folders so that I can group all my related subjects together. I also found it easier to view in the list area rather than the expanded view.
I then had a look in my account and went to igoogle. I changed themes a few times and added a few gadgets. I feel you have to be careful not to get carried away and put to much "stuff" here.
I returned to my account and signed up for Picasa, just played around here.
I only added one feed to Bloglines as I prefer Google Reader, I just wanted to compare the two.

Week 3, Image Generator and Library Thing
Thought I had better write my comments before I get carried away....having far to much fun.
With the Image Generators I had a look through all of them, some I liked more than others. Some I did find a little bit confusing and I did get a bit frustrated when things didn't work. I registered for ImageChef and did learn a lot by just playing around and managed to post a few images.
Also the interaction with other participants is great, sharing ideas and not to mention many giving helpful hints (which I need).
I set up a Library Thing account and had a good look around and added some of my books, I tried to add them in different ways, one very old book I added manually...just to see how it would work. Time permitting I hope to add a lot more...

Images
Signed up to ImageChef and had a look around. Checked out the templates and found one that I liked and sent it to my blog...mmm....what's this sidebar area? let's press it and see. I wonder if it will send it to my blog on the left hand side, yes it did.
I was wondering how to do this, and now it's something else I have learnt.

Week 2 - Flicker comment
First of all I had to learn how to transfer my photos from my camera onto my computer.
I then set up a flicker account and transferred two photos from my computer onto flicker.
I then posted these two photos onto my blog and published them.
I then had a go at publishing a photo directly from my computer onto my blog using the add image icon.
I then got back into flicker and searched for an image that I liked, found one and posted it to my blog with the link.
Phew...I had to go through the notes a few times before I really starting to get the hang of it all and probably need a lot more practice as these does seem a lot more that I could learn.
Anyway I enjoyed it and am looking forward to more challenges.

I know I seem to be Schnauzer mad, this is a good subject for me to practice on. I found this great photo in Flicker.

Week 1, Creating a Blog - my comment
I must admit that I also found the first exercise a bit of a challenge, not being computer savy. I did make a few mistakes when creating the blog, like loosing a couple of messages that I attempted to send and also loosing a few return comments to the other participants. I became very frustrated at this stage and took the dogs for a walk instead, however I did persist and did evidently get it right in the end..I found that I had to read the notes a few times before it made sense to me.
To-day I learnt how to copy photos from my camera onto my computer. I then went into my blog and edited my profile and inserted my photo....hooray I did it...

Creating a Blog
I have got my husband to set me up at home. I am using his laptop..terrible to use but I will persist with it.
I have a little more time at home to go through the reading material provided. Perhaps work is not the best time for reading.
I found this additional information very helpful, having never created a blog before I did find I was getting a bit confused.
Forgot in my excitment to introduce myself, my name is Jenny Jolley and I work part-time at the College of Anaesthetists Library which is located in St. Kilda Road Melbourne.

Blogging
Thought I'd try again as I had a few slip ups the first time. Thought I would practice a bit more, (makes perfect they say)
